Symptoms of Depression in Koreans and Japanese: A Cross-cultural Study

Abstract
Symptoms of depression in 69 Korean and 62 Japanese depressives who visited outpatient clinic of university hospitals were compared in order to gain insight regarding cultural differences. All subjects were interviewed using a semi-structured
questionnaire which contained 43 symptom choices.
Korean subjects had a greater variety of symptoms and were more apt to manifest multiple symptoms than the Japanese. The Korean depressives were characterized by hypochondriasis and somatic symptoms (i.e. gastrointestinal and cardiac), whereas
the
Japanese depressives were characterized by psychological symptoms. Feelings of guilt were more prevalent among the Japanese. However, there was no difference between the two groups in terms of suicidal ideation.
These results were discussed in terms of "culture and symptom manifestation."
